From Country Seat to Children's Sanctuary
Heatherwood Hospital stands on Brook Avenue in Ascot as a testament to nearly a century and a half of continuous transformation. The site's journey began in 1876 when a Victorian country house named "Heatherfield" was constructed on the heathland east of the village. The estate bore the Ponsonby family motto "Ferre va Ferme" over its front door, and during the 1880s and 1890s it served as the country seat of the Hon. Ashley Ponsonby, a Justice of the Peace and cousin to Sir Henry Ponsonby, Queen Victoria's Equerry.
By the turn of the century, the estate had passed to Sir Thomas Lucas, whose family had founded the prominent construction firm Lucas Brothers. The property was offered at auction in 1906 but failed to sell. Its fate changed in 1920 when the United Services Fund acquired it through private treaty, recognising the urgent need for medical facilities to serve the children of ex-servicemen returning from the Great War.
The Hospital Era Begins
The first patients were admitted in May 1922, more than a year before the hospital's formal opening. On 29 May 1923, the Duke of Connaught officially opened Heatherwood Hospital, which then comprised three wards with 136 beds dedicated to children suffering from surgical tuberculosis and orthopaedic diseases. The original wards served distinct age groups: one for children under seven, and separate wards for older boys and girls.
The hospital's management transferred to London County Council in 1934, and by 1937 expansion had increased capacity to 250 beds. Following the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948, Heatherwood joined the Windsor group hospital management committee within the North West Metropolitan region.
Successive decades brought significant developments. In 1961, Princess Mary, the Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, opened new accident and emergency, outpatient, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy facilities. A maternity department with 75 beds opened in April 1972. The 1980s saw further expansion with a mental health unit and elderly unit, officially opened by HRH Princess Anne in 1988.
Change and Continuity
The hospital faced challenges in the twenty-first century. The birth unit closed indefinitely in September 2011, followed by the minor injuries unit in January 2014. In October 2014, the Heatherwood and Wexham Trust was taken over by Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, setting in motion plans for comprehensive redevelopment.
Construction of a new hospital began in 2019 at a cost of £100 million. The new facility, located at the rear of the original site, was handed over from builders Kier in December 2021. Services transferred from the old building on 25 March 2022, with the first patient, Carol Gray of Bracknell, admitted on 28 March for a knee operation. On 19 January 2023, Sophie, Countess of Wessex (now Duchess of Edinburgh), officially opened the new hospital.
A Modern Elective Care Hub
Today's Heatherwood Hospital occupies an 11,500-square-metre purpose-built facility that has redefined what an NHS elective care centre can achieve. The building houses six laminar flow operating theatres, 48 inpatient beds, 22 day-case pods, 26 outpatient treatment rooms, six dedicated eye rooms, and two endoscopy suites. Radiology services include CT, MRI, X-ray, mammography and ultrasound facilities.
The hospital specialises in planned care across ophthalmology, general surgery, orthopaedics (including spinal procedures), gynaecology and urology. It holds GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time) accreditation as a surgical elective hub, serving patients across Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey. Environmental features include solar panels, a green roof for rainwater absorption, and extensive tree planting.
England's Highest Patient Satisfaction
The hospital's most significant achievement came to light in September 2025, when the Care Quality Commission published its Adult Inpatient Survey 2024. The survey gathered feedback from 63,573 patients nationwide who had stayed in hospital during November 2023. Heatherwood Hospital recorded the highest average score for overall patient experience in England: 9.7 out of 10.
Angela Lawes, managing director of Heatherwood Elective Centre, said: "We are very proud to receive such positive results and for Heatherwood to be ranked number one out of all the inpatient NHS hospital sites covered by the survey data." Health Secretary Wes Streeting visited the hospital in 2024 and described it as "the future of the NHS."
Performance figures demonstrate the centre's efficiency. By October 2022, staff had performed more than 1,000 hip and knee replacements (a 20 per cent increase on pre-Covid levels) and over 2,000 cataract operations. Forty per cent of patients are discharged within 24 hours of surgery.
The Original Site's New Chapter
The original hospital building and grounds have begun their own transformation. In March 2022, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead approved plans for 230 homes on the site, to be developed by Taylor Wimpey. While the development has drawn criticism from local councillors regarding affordable housing provision and pedestrian access, it marks another chapter in the evolution of this Ascot landmark.
The new hospital preserves elements of this history through memorabilia displays and wall murals that honour the century of care provided on the original site. From Victorian country house to children's tuberculosis hospital, through maternity services and mental health care, to today's nationally recognised elective surgery centre, Heatherwood continues to serve the health needs of the community while remaining rooted in the Ascot heathland where its story began.
